Layered Felt

My fascination with the art of lines and geometry is informed by the way nature produces beautiful and varied sculptures and form -from sea shells to flowers, tree bark to seed pods and skeletal winter forms stripped of the soft leaves and flowers and vibrant contrasting colours in spring and summer.

As my confidence using felt grows I am creating new techniques of layering. The challenge of my first layered piece was compounded by working out a design that would fit into a reclaimed 1940s ornate gold frame (and it’s imperial measurements!). After a bit of experimenting I revisited the popular grid design (used with many lenticular pieces e.g. mosiac grid) and merged that with a new oval, egg like concentric form. The felt layers ripple out to the ornate frame edge and the colours evolve to a gold hue that merges into the gold frame. The soft layered felt fabric contrasts well with the hard gold sculptured frame.

I created my GOD SAVE THE QUEEEN layered felt piece to allow the intricate Queen’s head to show through the complex Union Jack and word background.

I’m excited by this new technique. Do let me know what you think. I’m now on the hunt for more reclaimed gold frames. Let me know if you have one spare.
